Good Dog Bakery Story
I wanted to get into the dog business. Love, my Pit Bull/Pomeranian mix, has always been my muse and I wanted to do something dog related to celebrate her and the happiness that she has brought to me. My husband and I are entrepreneurs at heart, but finding the right business to explore that we would be passionate about didn't seem all that obvious from the start. Then one day the answer was so obvious.
In Dec 2006 I bought a cookie cutter for dog bones and recipe cards for my 3 dogs as a present. I promised them that that year with the new cutters, mom would make them healthy and delicious treats. I started playing with recipes and adding more and more stuff that dogs would like. My husband got involved and we're having a great time learning what would work and what wouldn't.
The biggest challenge was meeting and exceeding the expectation of Love, the muse. Love was an only child for the first half of her life. She was spoiled and unruly. She was particular and picky and didn't realize she was a dog, though I think she still does not. The treat had to pass the Love test. Would she eat it? Would she devour it or mouth it and then drop and stare? If it didn't pass her picky self, it simply wouldn't be made.
We went to the local library and checked out books on dog nutrition and dog health. We looked at the ingredients listing of our favorite snacks for our dogs and began realizing what we had been feeding. Many of the things we learned about dog nutrition and dog health were being ignored by our current favorite manufacturers. All those brands that we trusted were really not that good. Why not raise the bar?
The treats became better and better. The more we baked the more we wanted to give away. We treated family dogs and friend's dogs. The response from these dogs was not only positive but also overwhelming. They loved our treats!
If I'm out here looking for something healthy and delicious for my dogs, others are too. The answer became so clear. "Why not sell those treats? My dogs love 'em!" was the obvious answer to the question of what to do next. Good Dog Bakery was born.
Good Dog Bakery wasn't always the company name. Yeah we went through every title we could come up with. As we've done each step of the way, we enlisted certain individuals for our potential consumer panel. We would constantly throw ideas out as bait. Anything that got a nibble was worth considering.
The ingredients for our treats and the recipes themselves were the same way. We wanted to use only natural and organic ingredients, but we also wanted the freshest ingredients as well. The importance of using ingredients from Oklahoma became a major point in our quest for the best treat. Recipes were created, refined and refined some more. The recipe had to be tasty and wonderful but also unique and nutritious. That philosophy still holds true for our line of treats and all of our other products and recipes still in r & d.
We now have 4 dogs and the importance of healthy nutrition is so much more relevant with a growing puppy in the home. We are a small company but grown from the love of our dogs and the love of you for yours. Each person we educate to the importance of good foods for their dogs can teach others. Even if you're not buying our treats, please consider what you are feeding your dog.
